Apparently that bistro isn't the best

I don't get yesterday's strip. I guess the submitter is just confused by advertising in general?

I'm disappointed that Al doesn't explicity state that the Barfos are in a bistro in today's strip. (And also, I thought "Barfo" was the first name.) Now, I know that I've seen this strip before, but can't seem to find it in my archives. (I really need to go back and tag all of my entries.) Anyway, I'll give Mr. Barfo a pass, as he just says that the food isn't as good as it used to be. That doesn't necessarily mean that the food is bad; it just isn't "as good." Mrs. Barfo, though? Not cool. However, I'd probably eat mediocre food over trying to figure out what to cook for dinner, too. Probably, ha. I totally have. Though I don't loudly comment about how bad the food sucks before I ask for a box.

You're right, that strip does look like another repeat. I'm just too lazy to figure out where the previous entry is.

And seriously, who complains like that at a restaurant? Those sorts of people should beg shot--they don't know the first thing about civility. I've never been to a restaurant with bad food before. Are my expectations too low? Am I just lucky? Maybe I'm just not a jerk with a chip on my shoulder looking for something to complain about like most people seem to be these days.

Color me sick of society! :-)

The one you're thinking of, Barb, is from August 1, 2007. But it wasn't quite the same: in that one, the diners complimented the chef in the restaurant, and then bitched about the food's quality when they ate the remains of the doggy bag.
I recently submitted a "doggy bag" idea to Al, myself, in hopes of making a second appearance in the "Thanx" box, but it looks like he's been overwhelmed with doggy bag ideas (neither of these had appeared at the time of my submission). I don't know whether he's not using my idea because of the doggy bag glut, or because mine was one that you couldn't claim "they'll do every time" after running these two. (My idea was based on my wife's behavior: when we go to a really good restaurant with high prices, she thinks it's gauche to ask to bring home the uneaten portion of our $50 meal...but the half can of 69 cent beans left over from a home-cooked meal has to go in the fridge for leftovers!)

I do. I'm paying for it and I expect to get what I pay for.

Someone gives you some food for free and you don't like it, you don't complain because it's a gift. If you're paying though then it's a commercial transaction and you have a right to get what you ordered and for it to be of an acceptable quality.

Acceptable quality depends on where it is, of course. If I buy a burger from McDonald's then I fully expect to get something barely edible. If I'm at a restaurant I expect better.

And yet I've never had bad service or bad food in my life. . .again, either I'm charmed (or charming?), or othere people are walking around with an I'm-paying-for-it-so-it-had-better-meet-any-expectations-I-dream-up chip on their shoulder.

No offense. :-p

Well, Bob, it sounds as if you've just been extremely lucky, or maybe you don't eat out much! Unfortunately, plenty of perfectly nice people who aren't "jerks with chips on their shoulders" get bad service too.

Regarding today's strip, I actually thought it wasn't too unreasonable. Maybe the food was way too bland, and they're planning to really spice up the leftovers or mix them into something else. Of course, the loud complaining was uncalled for, but it's typical TDIET, so not at all surprising.
